Biography

José Antonio Castillo Torres (born January 23th, 1983 in Veracruz, Mexico) is a researcher in Building Physics ralated to Wind Engineering. He did two postdoctoral stays. The first stay was at the Laboratory of Sustainable Buildings (LES) of the Faculty of Architecture of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). This stay was sponsored by DGAPA UNAM. He also developed a science project in the LES sponsored by the Fund for Energy Sustainability of the Secretariat of Energy and the National Council for Science and Technology (CONACyT). The second stay was divided in two seasons: at the University of Sonora and at the Institute of Renewable Energies (IER) of the UNAM. This second stay was sponsored by the CONACYT-SENER Project 291600. He is also visiting professor in the Postgraduate and Research Section (SEPI) of the Superior School of Architecture and Engineering (ESIA) of the Polytechnique National Institute (IPN). In 2008, he got the Engineer and Architect degree from the ESIA-IPN. In 2009, he received his Master degree (in Science in Architecture) at the same university with the thesis Passive Cooling by Chilled Ceilings in Buildings. In 2011, he graduated from IER-UNAM as Master in Engineering in Energy with the thesis Natural Ventilation in Rooms with a Chilled Ceiling and an Internal Heat Source. In 2016, he obtained from IER-UNAM, the Doctor degree in Engineering in Energy with the thesis Natural Ventilation Using Windexchangers, under supervision of Dr. Guadalupe Huelsz. During his Doctorate studies, he did a stay to get a training in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) at the Department of the Built Environment, Building Physics and Services, Technical University of Eindhoven (TU/e), Eindhoven, The Netherlands, under supervision of prof. dr. ir. Bert Blocken (world leader in CFD applied to building physics). For his postgraduate studies at the UNAM and his doctoral stay at TU/e, he received different scholarships by CONACyT. He has awarded with the Second place to The Best Photograph of The Gallery of Fluids 2011 by the Fluid Dynamic Division of the Mexican Society of Physics, the Second place to the Oral presentation in Doctoral category by the 10th Student congress (2011) of the Center of Energy Research and the First place to the Oral presentation, in Doctoral category by the National Congress of Students of Renewable Energies 2014. He is member of the Researcher National System – CONACYT with Level 1 in the period January 2021 – December 2023.
His main areas of expertise are the Bioclimatic Design and the Building Wind Engineering. His research focuses on experimental and numerical modelling of natural ventilation, hygrothermal comfort, heat and mass transfer in buildings.
He has published 10 papers in International Scientific Indixing (ISI) journals with peer review, 1 chapter in International Scientific Indixing (ISI) book with peer review, 4 papers indexed in Latindex, 6 papers in proceedings of international conferences, 9 papers in proceedings of Mexican conferences, and 2 papers for science popularization. He is reviewer of 7 ISI journals. He has taught more than 20 courses in the bachelor track at Tecnológico de Monterrey (ITESM), 1 course (as assistant professor) in the bachelor track at IER-UNAM, 3 courses at FAD-UABC, 2 courses in the Master programme at Universidad Marista, 1 course in the Master in Engineering in Energy program at IER-UNAM, 3 courses in the Master in Renewable Energies in the Catholic University of Ecuador, and 1 course in the Doctoral program at SEPI-ESIA-IPN.
He has graduated 3 undergraduate students, 1 master student and 1 PhD student. He is currently supervising 3 PhD students.
